Goldberg on Bret Hart, possible Big E match, The Undertaker, AEW

WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg recently spoke with Insight’s Chris Van Vliet about a variety of topics. Goldberg dominated WCW with an impressive 173-0 winning streak, a streak that would also make him WCW World Champion. He joined WWE in 2003 and had a much longer streak from 2016-2022, during which he also held World Championship gold.

About Bret Hart

In 1999, a kick from Goldberg (among other problems the Hitman had built up) would cause Bret Hart to retire from the ring. In the quarter century since, Bret has repeatedly attacked Goldberg’s character and work as a wrestler. On the podcast, Goldberg admitted that he no longer cares what Bret has to say about him.

“I really don’t care what Bret does anymore, I don’t care… I talked Louis into giving Bret Hart a job at Legends of Wrestling. He needs to forget about that stuff.”

Goldberg added that he and Bret have spoken a few times since the accident, which Goldberg has always maintained was not intentional. He added that the fact that he is a relative rookie in the business hasn’t helped matters either.

“I was completely new to the business and anyone who knows me knows that if I didn’t mean to hurt him, it would have been an accident.”

About his WWE debut

After the demise of WCW, Goldberg waited until RAW after WrestleMania 19 to make his debut by attacking The Rock, setting up a Backlash 2003 match that Goldberg would win. Goldberg said that he really enjoyed working with The Rock.

“Big kudos to him for, you know, having the foresight that it would become something like this, he’s very selfless. And at the end of the day, he’s a dance man. We need everyone involved to be a part of it, because it’s a well-oiled machine.”

About the Undertaker match in Jeddah

In 2019, The Undertaker faced Goldberg at that year’s Super Showdown. Given the two’s age and ability, the dream match quickly turned into a nightmare with several blunders and mistakes. As Goldberg explained, he was barely in fighting condition before the match even started.

“I knocked myself out before I walked to the fucking ring… I have to headbutt the door. And I headbutted the door right when they played my music to wrestle Taker, which was the most incredible opportunity ever. And I knocked myself out.”

When asked if he could remember anything about the match now that he had been knocked out, Goldberg replied that he could only remember the unfortunate match.

“I remember the referee asking me if I could continue and I said yes. And then he turned around and I said no. And then I said yes and then I said no.”

About a possible match with Big E

During a viral episode of New Day’s Feel the Power podcast, Big E named Goldberg as his dream opponent, vowing that fans will see “Big Meaty Men Slapping Meat!” While Goldberg said he would give Big E the match tomorrow if he could, their clash of styles could prove difficult for the Hall of Famer.

“We can leave that part (big meaty men punching meat) out… I don’t do comedy. I never really fit in well with that.”

On AEW

In 2023, there were rumors that Goldberg would be joining AEW, especially after Tony Khan said he had great conversations with the Hall of Famer. When asked why nothing came of it, Goldberg suggested that he and Khan have a “different perspective” on things.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been close to a deal with him. I think it was a much more realistic transition when Sting was involved.”

Goldberg added that he reached out to Sting because he wanted to be a part of Icon’s farewell tour. While Goldberg would have liked to be a part of things, he’s glad the focus remained on Sting.

“I could never overshadow anything he does. I don’t want to confuse the waters. It would have been a nice crescendo, but it wasn’t about me.”
