‘Coraline’ Anniversary Reissue Is a Huge Success, Surpassing $20 Million Worldwide

The top animated film at the US box office last weekend wasn’t an expected CG blockbuster like Despicable Me 4 or Inside Out 2. Rather, it was the re-release of a 15-year-old stop-motion film Coral red.

The anniversary release of Fathom Events’ Henry Selick-directed Laika opened in fifth place with a crushing weekend haul of $8.3 million (est.). Since its release last Thursday, the film has generated more than $12.5 million in domestic box office, prompting Fathom to extend the film’s run through August 29.

Coral red is now the highest-grossing classic title release in Fathoms history. The re-release also surpassed the opening of Laika’s last original film, Missing link, which launched in 2019 with a turnover of $5.9 million.
