The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago all week the latest news from the Democratic National Convention.

Colleagues who once worked with Vice President Harris in law enforcement roles delivered speeches on the final night of the convention.

Harris’s embrace of her time in law enforcement is a stark difference from her previous campaign for president in 2020.

In her bid for the Democratic nomination, she shied away from her past as a prosecutor, when the Democratic Party’s base was calling for criminal justice reform, making her resume a burden on her campaign.

Years later, her campaign fully embraces her past as a San Francisco district attorney.

Amy Resner, a former prosecutor and friend of Harris, spoke at the convention and said that Harris used her position as a prosecutor to defend people who had been sexually abused and assaulted.

“For Kamala, practicing law has always been about protecting the vulnerable and giving a voice to victims,” she said.

Resner said Harris helped victims “get through their nightmares and seek justice for their injuries.”

“And she did it all with courage and grace and intelligence and heart,” she said. “She was a remarkable prosecutor and she will be a remarkable president.”

Lisa Madigan, former Illinois Attorney General, also highlighted Harris’ time as head of California’s law enforcement agency.

She specifically talked about the time she and Harris worked together during the recession to protect homeowners who lost their homes.

“She demanded that the big banks provide mortgage relief,” Madigan said.

“As long as I’ve known her, Kamala Harris has always taken principled stands and has never wavered from them.”
