Star Wars: The Acolyte’s Lee Jung-Jae was ‘very surprised’ that the show was cancelled after season 1

Star Wars: The Acolyte actor Lee Jung-jae has responded to Disney’s decision to cancel the series after just one season, saying he was “quite surprised” by the news.

Lee Jung-jae, who also starred in the hugely successful Netflix series Squid Game, told Entertainment Weekly that despite the cancellation, he hopes The Acolyte will return at some point.

Warning! Spoilers for The Acolyte Season 1 follow:

In The Acolyte, Lee Jung-jae plays a Jedi Master named Sol who is ultimately murdered by his former padawan, Osha (Amandla Stenberg). The series finale sets up a series of cliffhangers that may never be resolved following the show’s cancellation.

The Acolyte was a divisive show throughout its eight episodes, as some people sang its praises and enjoyed the various references And cameosincluding the long awaited reveal of Darth PlagueisOthers, however, were critical and pointed out problems with the incoherent writing And unusual choices which they felt did not fit in with Star Wars.

Showrunner Leslye Headland previously commented on the possibility of future seasons, telling Entertainment weekly she had “four or five great mysteries” that she would have liked to explore further than the first season. Also at D23 this year, star Manny Jacinto expressed his wish to play again his favorite character among the fans again.

It’s unclear at this point whether Disney will revisit Star Wars’ High Republic era or answer any of the questions The Acolyte posed during its first season. But given the show’s performance, it seems unlikely. While The Acolyte started out strong in ratings, with 11.1 million views in its first five days of streaminglost momentum and dropped off Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 chart in week three. However, it would return to the Top 10 at #10 for the season finale.

When I heard the news, I was personally quite surprised too.

“As you know, my character had already died in the first season,” Lee told Entertainment Weekly. “So I wouldn’t have been in the second season if there had been one. But I personally really loved Leslye’s writing. I thought she was a great writer and director who was very talented at telling stories and creating characters and creating meaningful structures in the story. So I personally was really looking forward to seeing a Season 2 with her at the helm.

“When I heard the news, I was personally quite surprised as well.”

While it now seems unlikely that we’ll ever get a season 2 of The Acolyte, Lee hopes Disney ultimately reverses its decision.

“Honestly, I hope that maybe there will be changes in the future,” Lee added. “Because you never know what’s going to happen. So on a personal level, I really hope that we get to see more stories from Leslye’s second season.”

Lucasfilm still has there are still plenty of Star Wars shows to comeNext up is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which debuts on December 3, and recently unveiled its first trailerfollowed by Andor Season 2 next year. Ahsoka Season 2 is also in development, as confirmed by Disney in January.
