A grandmother who shouted “truly disgraceful” racist abuse at police has become the first woman to be jailed in connection with violent unrest in Hull.

Jackie Miller, 57, of South Garth, Little Weighton, East Yorkshire, was heard repeatedly shouting and swearing at a line of police officers during the disturbance on August 3.

Hull Crown Court heard how the grandmother, who was jailed for eight months after pleading guilty to causing a racist public disorder, had unleashed her “diatribe” on her 15-year-old daughter.

Five other men were convicted of violent disorder at Friday’s hearing.

Michael Campbell, 56, Daniel Mennell, 36, Jarrod Farrah, 32, Ben Chapman, 20, and Joshua Hobman, 33, have all pleaded guilty to the charges.

Prosecutor Jeremy Evans said Miller “clearly demonstrated racial animus towards the asylum seekers the police were tasked with protecting”.

Hull Crown Court heard that a hotel on Ferensway, where migrants were staying, was targeted for looting. Officers formed a protective line to guard the hotel while shops on Jameson Street were looted after the murder of three girls in Southport last month.

Footage was shown in court showing the 57-year-old cleaner advancing towards a line of police officers carrying shields and repeatedly shouting racist comments at them.

Judge John Thackray KC told Miller she had used “truly disgraceful words” and that the images were “truly shocking to watch”.

Her lawyer, Rachel Scott, told the court the 57-year-old woman, who has three children and two grandchildren, was “disgusted with herself and ashamed”.

The court heard that one of Miller’s daughters was “so disgusted” by her mother’s behaviour that she “did not want to have a relationship with her after this incident”.

Mr Evans said Campbell had earlier that day placed a bicycle horizontally in front of him “as a makeshift cordon to ward off officers and a police dog”, who then bit him during the incident.

Footage showed Campbell, of Icelandic Close in Hull, being wrestled to the ground by a police dog as he led a line of officers guarding the hotel on Ferensway.

Defending Campbell, his lawyer Michael Forrest said the father of six was a family man who was “utterly disgusted by his actions”.

He said the 56-year-old “doesn’t know why he got involved” in the violence, as he went to town to buy a suit.

Judge Thackray sentenced him to 20 months in prison, telling him his offence was “motivated by racial animus”.

Daniel Mennell, 36, was sentenced to 27 months in prison.

The court heard that the drunken worker, who was at the forefront of the unrest, threw tiles at police.

In mitigation, his lawyer, Charlotte Baines, described his behaviour as “idiotic” and said he was “ashamed” that he had fallen back into his “old criminal habits”.

Jarrod Farrah, 32, was jailed for two years after he became aggressive towards police by ‘lashing out’ at them.

According to his lawyer, the father of two was “deeply ashamed of his actions, with which he had let himself and his family down”.

Judge Thackray sentenced all three defendants simultaneously, telling them: “I have watched all the videos about each of you and they are depressing and terrifying to watch.”

The court heard that Ben Chapman, 20, of Stockleigh Close, Hull, and Joshua Hobman, 33, of Wenlock Street, Hull, also threw missiles at police.

Chapman, who was serving a community service order for assaulting an emergency worker during the unrest, repeatedly kicked a bin stuck to the ground in an attempt to dislodge it and use it as a “projectile” but was “unsuccessful”.

The 20-year-old was sentenced to 28 months in a juvenile detention center for violent disorder, in addition to serving the remaining four months of his previous offense. In total, he was sentenced to 32 months in prison.

Hobman, who punched an officer’s shield and threw a can of liquor at police, was sentenced to two years in prison.

But the judge said his sentence would be reduced because he was the sole guardian of his nine-year-old son.
