Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, became emotional before the court on Friday and maintained his innocence.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had produced Sanjoy Roy before a court in Kolkata and sought permission for a lie detector test on the accused and suspects in the case.

The lie detection test can only be performed with the consent of the court and the suspect.

Sanjoy Roy reportedly burst into tears when the judge asked him why he was consenting to the lie detector test, The Times of India reported.

He told the court that he had agreed to the test because he believed he was innocent. “I have not committed any crime. I am being framed. Maybe this test will prove that,” the newspaper quoted Sanjoy Roy as saying.

The court then allowed a lie detector test to be conducted on Sanjoy Roy. It also sent him to 14 days judicial detention.

The court also allowed polygraph tests on former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and five others involved in the case. These five persons included four doctors who had dinner with the deceased doctor on the night of the incident and Roy.

Doctor in Kolkata rape and murder case

The junior doctor was raped and murdered on August 9 in a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The crime took place late at night in the seminar room on the third floor of the thoracic department. Police later reported that multiple cuts and wounds were found on her body.

Sanjoy Roy was arrested a day after the crime. He was seen entering the building around the estimated time of the crime, and his Bluetooth headset was found near the crime scene. Several pornographic clips were also found on Sanjoy Roy’s cell phone.

The crime sparked widespread outrage and protests within and outside the medical community.

Associations of resident doctors in most government hospitals in India protested for 11 days against the brutal rape and murder of the junior doctor. As a result, all elective services including outpatient clinics, non-emergency surgeries, diagnostics and other services were stopped. strike was called off on Thursday, after the Supreme Court ordered doctors to do so.
