Calcutta:

The anti-corruption wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday conducted searches at multiple locations linked to former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and his family members in the West Bengal city of Kolkata.

According to CBI sources, a search was conducted at 15 locations in the city for Dr Ghosh and his family members.

A CBI team also reached the residence of Dr Debashish Som, forensic medicine and toxicology demonstrator at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Sunday morning, they said.

These measures follow a complaint filed three days earlier by Akhtar Ali, former deputy director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in which he alleged corruption and irregularities at the institution, specifically naming Dr Debashish Som.

On Saturday, the CBI filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr Sandip Ghosh on the basis of directions of the Calcutta High Court. The investigation was initiated after a single bench of the High Court ordered the CBI to investigate the alleged corruption in the medical college.

Earlier, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Calcutta High Court visited the CBI office in Nizam Palace and handed over crucial documents related to the case. Acting swiftly on the information, the CBI filed the FIR and sent a copy to the Alipur Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on Saturday.

The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks’ time to file a progress report on the investigation, which is to be submitted by September 17.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Supreme Court had ordered that security of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) during the hearing of the capitol case involving the rape and murder of the junior doctor.

The junior doctor was found dead on August 9 in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
