Chelsea’s Noni Madueke praises Cole Palmer connection

Chelsea striker Noni Madueke was full of praise for his team-mate Cole Palmer after their 6-2 win over Wolves on Sunday.

Madueke scored a hat-trick in the second half, with Palmer providing assists for all three of his goals at Molineux, as Chelsea got their season off to a good start.

“He’s cold and I’m fire, so it goes well together. He always has the ability to play the right pass at the right time, so that’s brilliant,” Madueke told Premier League Productions.

“Today means a lot. Just being smart and waiting for the right moment. The system allows us to gauge and gauge and gauge and keep possession high (on the pitch).

“Maybe in the first half it was a bit more end to end, but in the second half we got control. The first (goal) was a bit of luck, the second was just Cole Palmer, two brilliant, weighted passes that I just had to step on to score.

“I’m happy with the hat-trick, but I’m even happier that we won the game.”

The 22-year-old also praised new manager Enzo Maresca.

“I think it’s clear. Everyone saw what he did last year at Leicester (getting promoted). He’s angry about his approach, about the little details.

“I think you see that, even in the first game against City, there were some nice plays that we probably just couldn’t finish, but today we were clinical. It’s a great day for him. I’m happy he got his first Premier League win for Chelsea.”

Palmer also scored a goal to give Chelsea a 2-1 lead just before half-time, with Wolves equalising shortly afterwards.

The second half, however, was Madueke and Palmer’s show.

Palmer was named PFA Young Player of the Year earlier this month after a successful debut season at Stamford Bridge, where he scored 27 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions after joining from Manchester City for £40 million ($52 million) in August last year.

Maresca will have been pleased with the performances of two of his star players, especially after a turbulent start to his time at the club, with questions being raised about the club’s transfer activities and the 2-0 defeat to City in their opening Premier League game of the season.

New Chelsea signing João Félix also scored in the win over Wolves, starting his second spell at the club.

Felix signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea from Atlético Madrid after spending six months on loan at the London club last season.
