Scottie Scheffler Shoots 71 at BMW Despite Sore Back

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has denied concerns about a back injury after he was seen stooping over an approach shot on his penultimate hole at the BMW Championship on Thursday.

After hitting his second shot on the par-5 17th hole at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, Scheffler immediately grabbed his lower back and then leaned briefly on his club before walking down the fairway.

After his round, in which he scored a 71 (-1), Scheffler told reporters that he woke up with a sore back and had trouble loosening it, but he doesn’t expect it to bother him for the rest of the tournament.

“It was hard for me to get through, and I spent most of the day trying to get through the ball,” Scheffler said. “On 17, I tried to hit a high draw, and that’s a shot where I really have to use a big turn, a big movement.

“Maybe I hit a few too many balls yesterday or something. It was just a little sore. I’m sure I’ll put some ice on it and stuff and I’ll be fine tomorrow.”

The top 30 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings after the final round of the BMW on Sunday advance to next week’s Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

Scheffler, who has had a fantastic 2024 season that includes victories at the Masters and Players Championship and an Olympic gold medal, can remain atop the leaderboard (and enter the Tour Championship with a two-stroke lead over everyone else) if he finishes fourth or better this week.
