Caden Tellier: Alabama high school football player dies after head injury

An Alabama community is in mourning after a high school quarterback died Friday night during the school’s season opener, according to statements from school officials and the teen’s family.

Caden Tellier was hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a head injury during John T. Morgan Academy’s game against visiting Southern Academy, officials said Friday night. His death was announced the following day.

Tellier was 16, according to CNN affiliate WSFA. He suffered a brain injury, according to a social media post from Alabama Independent School Association Executive Director Michael McLendon. Officials did not provide details about how Tellier was injured.

“Our boy, Caden Tellier, met Jesus face to face,” Tellier’s parents said in a statement Saturday. “Everyone who knows Caden has known kindness, generosity and love, and true to his nature, he is giving of himself once more.”

Caden Tellier carries the ball during the Morgan Academy American football game in Selma, Alabama, on August 23.

The school’s principal, Bryan Oliver, confirmed that Tellier was an organ donor, AL.com reports.

“Lives have been touched by the way he lived and now lives will be saved by his passing,” his parents’ statement said.

Oliver called Tellier a shining example who graced the halls of the private school in Selma, Alabama.

“He was a student, a friend, an athlete, and most importantly, a follower of Christ. There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family,” Oliver said in a statement on social media.

The Tellier family said a service will be planned soon. School officials at Morgan Academy suspended all school activities this week, the school association said.
