Extreme heat warning issued for blazing hot part of Michigan

It is clear that Tuesday’s heat could be several degrees hotter than this afternoon, with the heat index rising above levels that would require heat warnings and advisories.

The map with heat warnings and advisories gives you a good idea of where it will be warmest on Tuesday, August 27.

An extreme heat warning is in effect for most of Michigan’s southern border from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

The large orange shaded area in southern Lower Michigan is under a heat advisory for Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Heat index values are expected to range from 100 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit during the heat advisory period.

The National Weather Service says, “Extreme heat and humidity significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for people who work outside or participate in outdoor activities.”

There is still potential for showers and thunderstorms to help keep the high temperatures down. Hot and humid conditions tonight and Tuesday night with lows in the 70s will make it harder for people to recover from the effects of the daytime heat, especially those without air conditioning.

Heat indices south of I-94 could also top 100 degrees Wednesday. The uncertainty is greater for a dangerously warm Wednesday due to the possibility of thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids gives us this map showing isolated purple areas where extreme danger is possible at the highest heat and humidity.
