Chicago Weather: Severe Storms Topple Trees, Cause Power Outages for Thousands of ComEd Customers

CHICAGO (WLS) — Cleanup efforts continue in the Chicago area Wednesday morning after storms toppled trees and knocked out power.

As of 4:45 a.m., 26,897 ComEd customers were still without power.

Storms swept through the area on Tuesday evening after two days of extreme heat.

Some damage occurred in the northern suburbs.

In Deerfield near Broadmoor and Somerset, a car’s windshield was smashed when a tree fell on it. It is now covered.

Crews worked late into the night to clear fallen trees in Deerfield, leaving roads and yards covered in debris.

Video footage shows heavy rain, strong gusts of wind and a symphony of lightning flashes ripping across the northern suburbs.

In Vernon Hills, there were more downed trees and flooding in parts of that suburb.

The gusts have blown down trees, including in Evanston, where several trees were blown down along Sheridan Road near Church Street.
