Multiple Huskers land on National Football League rosters

The National Football League’s roster cuts came Tuesday, ending or at least delaying hundreds of professional football careers. However, several Nebraska football alumni had their contracts extended after training camps ended.

In Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers again retained linebacker Lavonte David and receiver Trey Palmer, as both look to play key roles for the reigning NFC South champions. David is coming off a 134-tackle year and is entering his 13th season. Palmer finished a solid rookie season with 39 catches for 385 yards and three scores in 2023.

In the NFC South, receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. continued to be waived by his hometown New Orleans Saints. Kearney native and former Husker defensive back Isaiah Stalbird was also waived by the Saints. In Carolina, defensive back DiCaprio Bootle was denied a second year with the Panthers.

The AFC South will feature two Blackshirts, including defensive lineman Khalil Davis of the Houston Texans and linebacker/special teams ace Luke Gifford of the Tennessee Titans. Both players are entering their second year with their respective franchises.

The NFC North will not have a Nebraska player on a gameday roster for Week 1, as the Green Bay Packers released receiver Samori Toure on Tuesday. Toure did sign with the Chicago Bears’ practice squad.

In the AFC North, the Cincinnati Bengals still had cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt on the roster after a solid sophomore season with four interceptions. However, the Bengals released defensive lineman Carlos Davis.

The NFC East has released former Husker lineman Nick Gates to the Eagles, though he will reportedly sign with the practice squad. Philadelphia is expected to start Beatrice native Cam Jurgens at center to replace All-Pro Jason Kelce. The New York Giants have released former Husker and Oregon Duck defensive lineman Casey Rogers.

Quarterback Adrian Martinez’s excellent pre-season did not earn him a spot on the roster, as the New York Jets opted to keep Florida State rookie Jordan Travis on the roster.

Arizona and San Francisco will both feature a Husker, as the Cardinals signed tight end Travis Vokolek and the 49ers kept defensive lineman Maliek Collins in the NFC West. Despite some strong preseason performances, defensive lineman Ben Stille was cut by Arizona.

Finally, former Husker running back Ameer Abdullah was drafted to the Las Vegas Raiders roster in the AFC West. Lineman Brenden Jaimes was also signed to the Los Angeles Chargers gameday roster. The Denver Broncos released two Nebraska defensive backs, Omar Brown and Quinton Newsome.

Nebraska did not have a single NFL Draft selection in April’s draft, but did have nine players selected to the Reese’s Senior Bowl preseason players to watch list.
