The 8 College Football Games to Watch in Week One

For more coverage, check out the Penn State-West Virginia game preview as well as the Big Ten Week 1 preview.

(#14)Clemson at (#1)Georgia
Afternoon, ABC

This game will serve as a barometer for Clemson’s current state — are they still a true national title contender, or have they become a solid program ranked in the back half of the top 25? While the Tigers have maintained a high level of defense, their offense has lagged over the past four seasons. Perhaps a big loss will finally convince Dabo to join the modern era and enter the transfer portal.
Prediction: Georgia-27, Clemson-16

South Dakota State at (#17)Oklahoma State
2:00 p.m., ESPN+

Oklahoma State is a legitimate threat to win the Big 12 and get a first-round bye with a ton of returning talent, including Heisman candidate Ollie Gordon at running back. However, playing against the current FBS powerhouse team in Week 1 could be quite the ordeal. This game certainly has the potential to be a close one all the way to the end and possibly one of the big surprises of Week 1.
Prediction: Oklahoma State-28, South Dakota State-27

(#19)Miami near Florida
3:30 PM, ABC

Miami had a successful offseason bolstering their roster and now expects to have the talent to be a real contender this season. How many times have you heard that over the years, only to see the ‘Canes fall flat long before Halloween? Florida, on the other hand, is basically a write-off with a coach on the hot seat and a nightmare schedule. Something tells me all that talk has fueled their motivation over the past few months and they’ll be ready to take on the ‘Canes when they enter The Swamp.
Prediction: Florida-27, Miami-24

Old Dominion in South Carolina
4:15 p.m., SEC Network

Former Penn State offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne has pulled off some major upsets, even landing in the top 25 since taking over at Old Dominion. Are they ready to enter SEC territory and leave with a win?
Prediction: South Carolina-20, Old Dominion-17

(#7)Notre Dame at (#20)Texas A&M
7:30pm, ABC

The Irish should have one of the best defenses in the country, and Duke transfer Riley Leonard should give the offense a boost at the quarterback level. They’ll also have to get a wildly inexperienced offensive line up to speed quickly, which will be a tough task against an Aggies defense loaded with future draft picks. The days of Texas A&M underachieving may be a thing of the past with Mike Elko at the helm. Expect a hard-hitting, low-scoring affair that will be decided in the trenches.
Prediction: Notre Dame-16, Texas A&M-13

Wyoming at State of Arizona
10:30 PM, FS1

Need your college football fix late into the night? Then this is the game for you. Expect some madness as these two programs meet late at night in the desert.
Prediction: Wyoming-32, Arizona State-29

SUNDAY

(#23)USC on (#13)LSU
7:30pm, ABC

These teams were mirror images of each other last season: an offense that could score at will with a Heisman winner slinging the ball, and a defense that didn’t seem to understand it could tackle (USC) or cover receivers (LSU). While both teams have made significant changes on the defensive side of the ball, things don’t change that quickly over the course of an offseason. That could easily come down to which team gets the ball last and/or avoids a key mistake late in the game.
Prediction: LSU-52, USC-48

MONDAY

Boston College at (#10)*State of Florida
7:30 p.m., ESPN

This wasn’t really on my radar until the ‘Noles lost their Week 0 game to Georgia Tech. Florida State could be in for a very tight squeeze as they try to avoid an 0-2 start and repair their offense, which has looked a long way from the explosive unit they had last season that carried them to a 13-0 record. Can Bill O’Brien get the BC offense to do enough in his Eagles debut?
Prediction: Florida State-23, Boston College-20

*Ranking prior to the week in which Florida State lost zero to Georgia Tech
