He succeeded Fred Petito, who coached Millard North for 41 years.

The Mustangs raced to a 16-0 lead in the first half of the season opener for both schools, leading 23-14 at halftime and 29-14 early in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats scored to make it 29-21 with 6:03 left and recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick. The Mustangs held on and took over with four minutes left but were forced to punt.

Millard West marched to the Millard North 2-yard line with two seconds left. Quarterback DJ Schiemann was stopped inches from the goal line as time expired.
