Blanche Ely defeats nationally ranked Chaminade-Madonna in overtime

Not many noticed when Pompano Beach Florida native Blanche Ely High scored 70 points in last week’s season opener against Boyd Anderson, but the Tigers certainly have everyone’s attention now.

In a stunning result, Blanche Ely defeated Florida powerhouse Chaminade-Madonna 35-34 in overtime on Friday, securing a win for the ages.

Quarterback Omari McNeal scored on a 5-yard run in overtime to give the Tigers a 35-28 lead. The Lions also scored a touchdown on their overtime possession, but missed the extra-point kick to spark a wild celebration for the home team.

Chaminade-Madonna had a chance to win the game in the final minute of regulation time, but their field goal attempt from 36 yards was blocked.

Blanche Ely built a 21-7 lead before Chaminade fought back to tie the game at 21-21 midway through the final quarter. Undeterred, the Tigers scored again to regain a seven-point lead, but Chaminade-Madonna scored again with just over four minutes left in regulation to tie the game at 35-35. The Lions drove to the Blanche Ely 19 to set up their failed attempt at the winning kick.

Blanche Ely is not in any state polls, which should change now, while Chaminade is ranked No. 8 in the SBLive/SI Top 25 National High School Football Rankings this week. Just last week, the Lions went toe-to-toe with St. John Bosco (Calif.), the No. 3 team in the country, before losing 34-27.
