US Open 2024: Novak Djokovic, Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka in action on day five

Novak Djokovic continues his bid for his 25th Grand Slam singles title when he takes on Australian Alexei Popyrin in the third round of the US Open on Friday.

The 37-year-old Serbian, who has 24 major singles titles to her name with Margaret Court, will play the number 28 seed in the evening session at 00:00 BST at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Defending champion Djokovic and Popyrin will face each other for the third time at a Grand Slam this year. At the Australian Open and Wimbledon, the Serb won in four sets.

“I’m happy to win four sets again. Don’t get me wrong. But he’s getting closer and knocking on that door,” Djokovic said.

“He’s played some great tennis, so there’s no reason for him not to believe he can do a great job, and he’s going for the win. I know that.

“But I also know what to expect. I’m going to do my homework and see what needs to be done.”

Djokovic reached the third round after compatriot Laslo Djere retired with an injury in the second round, while 25-year-old Popyrin defeated Spaniard Pedro Martinez in three sets.

The Serb has won Flushing Meadows four times, while Popyrin has failed to reach the third round on the last two occasions he has done so.

In the women’s event, the American is the third seed Coco Gauff continues the defense of her title against Ukraine Elina Svitolina at Arthur Ashe Court from 17:00 BST.

The 20-year-old Gauff defeated Germany’s Tatjana Maria in three sets to advance to the match against 27th-seeded Svitolina, who defeated compatriot Anhelina Kalinina 6-1 6-2.

Gauff’s triumph was her ninth consecutive US Open victory, but she now faces a player in good form: former world number three Svitolina, who did not drop a serve in her win over Kalinina.

It is the fifth time the two have met, with two wins for both.

Last on Arthur Ashe Court Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka takes on the Russian 29th seed Ekaterina Aleksandrova.

Sabalenka, a two-time Australian Open winner, will be hoping to do even better after finishing runner-up in New York last year, while Alexandrova is hoping to reach the fourth round for the first time in Flushing Meadows.
