    The Michigan Wolverines, the reigning national champions of college football, will take the field at the Big House on Saturday to open their season against the Fresno State Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m.

    Michigan’s football team has lost a lot of talent, but still ranks No. 8 in the preseason coaches’ poll, the lowest ranking for a reigning champion since 2011.

    New head coach Sherronne Moore will lead the team this year, replacing Jim Harbaugh, who moved to the NFL as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Moore served as interim coach for four games, including during Harbaugh’s second suspension last season amid the team’s sign-stealing scandal. Moore led the Wolverines to their last three regular-season victories against Penn State, Maryland and Ohio State.

    In addition to the major changes at Michigan and its roster, there are also shifts taking place across the college football landscape.

    The Big Ten has added four West Coast teams in Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA. There are no longer divisions, so the top two teams from the league’s 18 will play for the conference championship in Indianapolis. (Michigan is the three-time reigning Big Ten champion.)

    The NCAA is also introducing the new 12-team College Football Playoff pool.
