Video shows burglars using chain on pickup truck to break into Chicago gas station – NBC Chicago

Chicago police are investigating after burglars broke into a gas station in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, used a chain attached to a pickup truck, and stole an ATM.

Authorities say the brazen burglary happened around 2 a.m. Thursday, when a group of at least four men drove into the parking lot of a Citgo gas station at 7600 S. South Chicago Avenue in a black pickup truck. They first used tools to open the first set of doors, then used a chain attached to the truck to pry open the iron gates.

Once inside, surveillance video shows the men pulling an ATM out of the floor, loading it into the pickup truck and then fleeing south on S. South Chicago Ave., all in less than four minutes.

“It’s costing us more and more and more and more,” said manager Rodney Walker.

He said his business likely lost more than $10,000 because of the ATM and its contents, the broken doors and the broken frame.

Moreover, this is not the first time this has happened.

“This door right here is a metal door, it’s the first time they’ve ever broken into the building,” Walker said. “They came in with crowbars and everything, broke it open, broke in and took the ATM.”

Walker said they entered through the roof another time.

“It’s just horrible. It’s horrible,” he said. “There’s nothing we can do about it.”

He said they have already made changes to the alarm system, upgraded and added cameras, but since the group is still at large, they are at their wits end.

“We don’t know what to do. It’s happening everywhere, not just here. It’s everywhere and it’s a disgrace,” Walker said. “The reason they commit these crimes is because they know if they get caught and go to jail, they’re going to get right back out.”

According to police radio reports, officers were initially sent to the scene while the burglars were still inside the store. However, by the time police arrived, the suspects had already fled.

Authorities say the incident is under investigation and no one has been arrested.
