Nick Saban Makes Hilarious Comment About Ohio State’s $20 Million NIL Football Roster

Nick Saban has given his opinion on the current state of football, including the way NIL is encouraging players to move between transfer markets depending on the type of money they are paid.

Because players can benefit from NIL, some schools are more successful than others. This is especially true for the Ohio State Buckeyes, a school with a $20 million roster based on NIL signings.

Saban made a hilarious comment during ESPN’s “College GameDay,” the program he will appear on after stepping down as Alabama’s head coach last season, when discussing the Buckeyes’ roster.

“You keep talking about a $20 million roster. If you don’t have the right guys playing, you’re out of luck,” Saban said candidly.

Saban’s panelists burst out laughing when they heard him swear on live television. Veteran college analyst Kirk Herbstreit followed up by saying, “Congratulations, you just broke the Internet.”

Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork told Yahoo Sports in an interview that head coach Ryan Day’s football roster costs $20 million.

On one hand, the astronomical cost is indicative of the amount of talent Day and his coaching staff were able to recruit to Ohio State. But the reality that teams are now both recruiting with money and selling the players in the program gives teams like the Buckeyes an edge over others.

Among those prospects are several players who decided to remain in college despite having a chance to be drafted into the NFL.

Running back TreVeyon Henderson, edge rusher Jack Sawyer, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka and others opted to stay and continue to benefit from NIL deals as they chased a national title.

Day also brought in quarterback Will Howard, who transferred after four years at Kansas State. He’s expected to start for the Buckeyes to open the season. And the Buckeyes had the fifth-ranked 2024 recruiting class by 247 Sports, bringing in fresh talent that could make an immediate impact.
