The McFlurry Machine is always broken, and so are some of the smart people looking for dirt on Kamala Harris.

On Thursday, the right-wing newspaper reported The Free Beacon published an article suggesting that Harris may have lied about a brief stint at a McDonald’s while in college.

Harris has spoken often about her time working as a cashier, fry cook and ice cream maker in the summer of 1983 in Alameda, California, while still a student at Howard University. The summer job has been featured in campaign materials, and Bill Clinton even joked during the Democratic National Convention last week that Harris “might break my record as president for the most time spent at McDonald’s.”

In 2019, Harris joined a picket line of McDonald’s workers in Las Vegas, Nevada, who were striking for a $15 minimum wage. She recalled that although she was “making the fries and the ice cream” at the Golden Arches, at the time “there was no family counting on me to pay the rent, put food on the table, pay the bills at the end of the month.”

Earlier this year, Harris spoke about his work at McDonald’s on The Drew Barrymore Show“I did the fries, and then I did the cash register,” she said.

But for some on the right, Harris hasn’t provided enough documentation to definitively prove she spent a summer in California selling fries and soft-serve ice cream. The publication took issue with Harris’s failure to mention her time at McDonald’s in either her 2010 or 2019 memoirs.

The Free Beacon also cited a copy of a 1987 application Harris submitted to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for a position as a paralegal.

On the application, Harris lists her education, her credentials, and her previous work experience with various law firms and the Federal Trade Commission. McDonald’s is nowhere to be found, which the Free Beacon finds suspicious. After all, how does the Alameda County district attorney know she’s any good at frying potatoes? Does she know how to fill a soft-serve machine? How can she expect to work as a clerk without those skills?

The non-troversy reflects a series of desperate attacks on Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz — who was excoriated by the Free Beacon for claiming two decades ago that he had received the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce’s “Outstanding Young Nebraskan” award when it was actually an award from the state’s Junior Chamber of Commerce. Seriously.

From accusations that she’s a communist, to misogynistic memes promoted by Trump on social media, to racist attacks questioning her race and ethnicity, Harris has been put through the wringer — and handled it with considerable grace. Because if there’s one thing to learn from working at a fast food chain, it’s how to deal with arrogant braggarts who think they can get what they want by yelling angrily.

When CNN asked her on Thursday to respond to Trump’s claims that she had recently “accidentally turned black,” Harris brushed off the criticism.

“Same old, tired script,” she said. “Next question, please.”
