US Citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin Confirmed Dead in Gaza

Topline

Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an American citizen held hostage by Hamas and whose parents had been vocal in calling for his return, is one of six hostages found dead in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

Key Facts

Goldberg-Polin, 23, was found dead along with five other hostages by the Israeli military in a tunnel under Rafah on Saturday, the Israeli military said.

The other hostages whose bodies were recovered by the IDF were Carmel Gat, 40, Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Alexander Lobanov, 33, Almog Sarusi, 27, and Master Sergeant Ori Danino, 25. According to the IDF, they were all killed shortly before they were found.

He was one of the hostages taken during Hamas’s first attack on a music festival in southern Israel on October 7. In April, Hamas posted a video of him missing part of his left arm.

Goldberg-Polin, a native of Berkeley, California, had become known because his parents, Jon and Rachel, were outspoken advocates for the return of the hostages from Israel. They spoke at the Democratic National Convention and met with world leaders to advocate for a ceasefire and a deal to release the hostages.

The Goldberg-Polin family confirmed Hersh’s death in a statement, saying they were “devastated” and asked for “privacy at this time,” CNN reported.

President Joe Biden said in a statement that he was “devastated and outraged” and praised Hersh’s parents, who he said “have been relentless and tireless champions for their son and for all hostages held under unconscionable circumstances.”

Chief Critic

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed Hamas and its leaders directly in a statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: “You will pay the price. We will not rest, nor will we be silent. We will pursue you, we will find you, and we will deal with you.”

Tangent

The IDF said Saturday that 101 hostages remained, but it did not specify whether that included hostages who are no longer alive. Some media outlets have given a different number: The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that 97 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, including those who are no longer alive, and the BBC also reported that 97 hostages are still missing. About 250 people were taken hostage on Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, and about 117 were freed in a hostage exchange.
