Gangs in Aurora, Colorado: Police visit Lowry Apartments, patrol areas where suspected Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua is active

AURORA, Colorado — In Aurora, Colorado, concerns are growing about the presence of a Venezuelan gang.

There are reports that members of the Tren de Aragua gang have taken over an apartment complex in the city. Police have not verified these claims.

A video is circulating on social media showing a group of men trying to break into an apartment.

The alleged gang activities are causing problems for migrants in the area.

They say the gang is destroying the reputation of migrants who are not causing trouble and are simply trying to make a life for themselves in the United States.

Groups representing them say the migrants are trying to find housing and work, but some in the community are reluctant to help, fearing they are part of a gang.

Aurora Police Department officers proactively patrol areas where Tren de Aragua activity is suspected.

On Sunday, Interim Detective Heather Morris and several officers met with residents of the Lowry Apartments to reassure them, provide updates on criminal activity in the area and learn more about living conditions in the complex.

“I came through here on 12th and Dallas, we have quite a few of our officers here tonight. Again, I’ve been here for a number of weeks now, reaching out to our residents, reassuring them of the criminal activity that’s happening here and how we’re going to address it. We’re here, we want to reassure the people who live in this community that we’re actively investigating the criminal activity that’s happening and listening to them so that we can learn anything that we’re missing,” Morris said. “You know, what are we missing and what exactly is going on? We’re here because we care. I mean, nobody, nobody should wear this uniform if they don’t care. And we want the residents and the people who live here to know that we care. We’ve been talking to the residents here and learning from them to figure out exactly what’s going on. And there’s definitely a different picture.

Morris continued, “I’m not saying that there aren’t gang members that don’t live in this community, but what we’re learning here is that gang members have not taken over this complex. We’ve really made an effort over the last few days to just ask the specific questions or the direct questions in regards to gang activity and who’s actually making sure that people aren’t paying rent to gang leaders or gang members, that that’s not happening. And we found out here today and yesterday, you know, in talking to, you know, so many residents said that’s not the case that we’ve been talking about, and they were sincere about it. We really believe that they’re sincere about it and we’re standing out here, and I can tell you that gang members have not taken over this apartment complex.”
