Mohamed Salah scored and set up two goals from Luis Diaz to hand Liverpool another heavy defeat to rivals Manchester United, this time losing 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Casemiro made two big mistakes that led to Diaz’s goals and was substituted at half-time after starting player Manuel Ugarte failed to enter the game in time.

It was a brilliant result for Arne Slot, who secured a convincing 3-0 win over a rival in his third Premier League game as Liverpool manager. The Reds are 3-0-0 and have yet to concede a goal under Slot.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, will have to grieve the question of “What if?” during an international break that sees his Red Devils beat Fulham and lose to top-four rivals Brighton and Liverpool.

Ten Hag may lament the late addition of Ugarte and the injury to Hojlund, but he himself can’t say much about what happened to Casemiro and the moment he took the Brazilian off the pitch. Put simply, his system needs two excellent defensive midfielders to give Bruno Fernandes the freedom to do his best. He has a 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo — a fine prospect but not the finished project — and his next option after Casemiro’s two mistakes was a 20-year-old with no Premier League minutes. He needed a better plan and none of his attacking players saved him (although Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui impressed again at the back).

Arne Slot’s Liverpool took a while to get going, ceding 67% of the ball in the first 15-20 minutes, but from then on it was all dominance. Mohamed Salah didn’t get Man of the Match, but he and Luis Diaz were fantastic, while Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch were near perfect in midfield. Three games, seven goals and no conceded for the Reds against Ipswich Town, Brentford and Manchester United is a decent start.

Bruno Fernandes: Don’t blame Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo

“Goals are always self-inflicted,” Fernandes said after the game on Peacock Premium. “With every goal, you usually have to make a mistake to give them the goal. We don’t have to blame everyone. That’s not going to help us now, so that’s not the point.”

“When you concede a goal, you can’t point to one mistake. It’s more than that. We can say that when you lose the ball in the middle. What’s the point of saying that Casemiro lost the ball or that Kobbie lost the ball. They lost the ball because they got the ball and wanted to be brave.”

“(Casemiro) has more experience than me, so I don’t have to tell him anything. He knows what football is about. He’s played for the two best clubs in the world. And Kobbie is a great boy. I want him to have the ball more often and be brave. I don’t want them to stand still now and think about a mistake.”

Now Casemiro’s poor first half led to a forced substitution and a relatively green midfield against one of Liverpool’s strong points. Bad week for this.

United now have possession, trailing by 2 points, but as I type this it’s another poor betrayal by the Red Devils at their own third base, with Liverpool in possession.

Casemiro out at half time

It was bound to happen and Casemiro’s departure means a very young central midfielder is emerging as 20-year-old Toby Collyer joins 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

Noussair Mazraoui is injured early in the second half. There seems to be a long discussion about whether he will be allowed to stay with a suspected head injury. He will stay with the Red Devils.

Moments make a game, and two mistakes by Casemiro – the second was caused by contact from Luis Diaz but a difficult to correct non-call – have led to goals from Luis Diaz.

Manuel Ugarte was obviously not signed up in time, but Erik ten Hag will want him. Alejandro Garnacho is also a nuisance on the right flank. Christian Eriksen and Amad Diallo?

Liverpool had an uncertain start, but they responded almost perfectly. They won the ball back and could easily win again. 2-0 for the third time?

Casemiro thought he had been fouled but no whistle blew as Luis Diaz received part of the ball.

The ball is quickly above the 18, and Salah sets Diaz on edge again. This time it’s a low, soft finish inside the near post.

United get a chance through Mazraoui

Man Utd create a great chance with a long diagonal ball, which leads to a cross from Bruno Fernandes, which changes direction and ends up in the path of Noussair Mazraoui, about 20 yards from goal.

Alisson saves Mazraoui’s low shot through the crowd and Liverpool clear the danger.

United’s new centre-back has fended off several Liverpool attacks and is looking very comfortable.

That’s no great surprise given he gets along well with right-back Noussair Mazraoui and goalkeeper André Onana, but it’s still impressive given the fierce rivalry at Old Trafford.

Joshua Zirkzee has looked dangerous in his first few outings and could start as United look to gain more control and potentially not get as many counter-attacks.
