Labor Day is Monday, September 2. This holiday marks the unofficial end of summer 2024.

With students heading back to school, many Americans are enjoying one last long weekend to host a summer barbecue or spend a day at the beach.

The first Monday in September commemorates the American labor movement and the contributions workers have made to the American economy.

That doesn’t mean Americans shouldn’t go grocery shopping anymore, whether it’s a trip to the bank or picking up an ingredient at the supermarket.

Here’s what’s open and closed on Labor Day 2024.

Those who have to run to the store are mostly in luck. Most of the Kroger stores — including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer and Food 4 Less — are open as normal.

Major retailers such as Walmart (WMT) and Target are open as normal.

Most CVS (CVS) Pharmacy locations are open, but some local stores may have reduced hours. Walgreens stores will operate at their normal hours on Labor Day, but most pharmacies will be closed, except for 24-hour locations and select pharmacies.

It is notable that wholesale chain Costco (COST) will be closed.

Don’t expect to be able to send mail via the United States Postal Service on Monday, as the carrier is closed. All UPS services are also closed except Express Critical, and a limited number of locations are open. Only FedEx Custom Critical, the premium service for special shipments, is operational, and the FedEx Office service has adjusted hours.

Labor Day is one of 11 federal bank holidays, so banks are closed. However, ATMs and online banking services are available.

The US stock market will also be dark. NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange will not trade.

Federal offices and government buildings are closed Monday — think the DMV and local libraries. State and local courthouses are also closed.
