Costco Raises Prices for Gold Star, Business and Executive Memberships

Consumers on Long Island will pay a few dollars more when they shop at Costco.

The major department store chain raised the cost of Gold Star personal and business memberships by $5, from $60 to $65, effective Sunday. The cost of Costco’s premium plan, the Executive Membership, is increasing by $10, from $120 to $130.

The 2% maximum reward for Executive Membership will increase from $1,000 per year to $1,250.

According to Costco, the rate increase is the first in seven years.

“Our membership fees help offset operational costs, allowing us to keep our prices low,” the company said on its website. “A modest increase in fees allows us to provide even more value to our members.”

Some shoppers have said they might take their business elsewhere because of the fee hike. Costco’s stock has nearly doubled since the start of 2023, The Associated Press reported in July, boosting the company’s market value by about $180 billion over that period.

Costco shares rose more than 2% after news of the rate hikes and sales figures broke.

“They make enough money,” Felix Baba, of Deer Park, told Newsday in July after shopping at Costco’s Commack store. “Why (do) they want to make more money off of us?”
