MLB Odds for 2024: Can Shohei Ohtani Earn MLB’s First 50/50 Season?

Writing history always seems far-fetched…until someone gets close to it.

On August 23, Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani stole his 40th base hit of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays before hitting his 40th home run of the year in the ninth inning, a walk-off grand slam that gave LA the win and put Ohtani in the MLB record books.

With that performance, he became the sixth player in league history to record 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season, effectively joining the 40/40 club.

But there seems to be (possibly) more history to come for Ohtani.

Could he be the first member of the 50/50 club?

Ohtani has played in 134 games this year and currently has 44 home runs and 43 stolen bases to his name. That means he has 28 more games to hit six home runs and steal seven bases.

Let’s take a look at the odds of Ohtani becoming the league’s first 50/50 player at FanDuel Sportsbook starting September 2:

Ohtani hits 50+ home runs and 50+ stolen bases in the 2024 regular season:

Yes: -125 (bet $10 to win $18 total)
No: -102 (bet $10 to win $19.80 total)

Ohtani’s chances of achieving the unprecedented feat have diminished in recent weeks. On August 26, he was ranked Yes +175 and No -270.

The six members of the 40/40 club are Jose Canseco (A’s, 1988), Barry Bonds (Giants, 1996), Alex Rodriguez (Mariners, 1998), Alfonso Soriano (Nationals, 2006), Ronald Acuna Jr. (Braves, 2023) and Ohtani.

However, Ohtani achieved this feat in 21 fewer games than any other club member.

Ohtani also has a chance to become the first player in league history to hit 45 home runs and steal 45 bases. Rodriguez stole 46 bases and stole 42 home runs, Soriano had 46 home runs and stolen 41 bases and Acuna stole 73 bases and stole 41 home runs, but none have managed 45/45.
