Mike Norvell wondered if he considered benching DJ Uiagalelei in Boston College loss

Boston College Bullies Florida State In Labor Day Stunner | Time to Trade Dju for Brock Glenn

In what turned out to be a horrible Monday night for State of Florida, Mike Norvell decided not to make any in-game changes. Despite the chants from the crowd at Doak Campbell Stadium Brock Glenn‘s name, Norvell stuck with DJ Uiagalelei as quarterback in the loss to Boston College.

When asked about his decision not to bench Uiagalelei, Norvell instead took the opportunity to use some coaching language. He believes that Florida State’s coaching staff needs to focus on putting players in the right position to succeed. Norvell’s main goal is to find a way to make the Seminoles improve.

“We struggled offensively,” Norvell said in his postgame press conference. “There were a lot of reasons for that. Everything we do, we have to push and get better. That’s what we’re going to focus on. We’re going to focus on pushing to get better. We’re going to put our guys in position to be successful and that’s what we’re going to focus on.”

Uiagalelei finished with 272 yards, a touchdown, and an interception that night while completing 50 percent of his 42 pass attempts. Sure, there were some drops, but a few throws should have been automatic from the fifth-year quarterback.

There were some positive flashes in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, something Norvell emphasized in his remarks. But early on, the passing game did not help the team move forward.

“There wasn’t a lot that clicked,” Norvell said. “We struggled to win one-on-one early on. We had moments where they were pressuring us, we missed a throw, missed a catch, and tried to find a rhythm offensively. We didn’t do that well. I think we got into that later when we got rolling. We had a couple of explosive plays that stood out.”

Florida State has a week off after playing two games before Week 1 officially ended. Memphis is next on the schedule, with Norvell’s old program coming to Tallahassee. This is an instant must-win for the ‘Noles.

There is still a lot of room for improvement, but it appears the head coach is primarily focused on a fast-paced offense, regardless of who is at quarterback.

“We’ve got to be able to start fast,” Norvell said. “We’ve got to be able to go out there and compete and win our one-on-ones and execute. We’ve got to be able to protect. And then obviously we’ve got to have balance in the run game.”
