Good morning and happy Labor Day! We are starting September with another heat wave. Get ready, this is going to be a scorching day.

If you’re heading to the beach for the holidays, expect some low clouds this morning followed by afternoon sun. Highs today along the beaches will range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, with temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius in Long Beach. Inland coasts will range from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, with highs in downtown LA reaching 32 degrees Celsius.

It will be warm in the valleys, with highs between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius. In the western San Fernando Valley and the Inland Empire, it can even reach 40 degrees Celsius.

In Coachella Valley it is 42 degrees Celsius, in the desert the temperature drops to 40 degrees Celsius.

Tonight, temperatures in Southern California will be a minimum of 63 degrees to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

An extreme heat warning begins Wednesday for Southern California, as valley temperatures will soar into the low 110s, with the low desert expected to reach 118 degrees. Forecasters say the peak of this heat wave will be on Thursday and Friday.

Tips to stay cool

    • Children’s pool
    • Lotions in the refrigerator
    • Eat spicy food in the basement (or on the floor) while wearing a damp shirt and listening to rain on your white noise machine
    • Make sure the ceiling fans run counterclockwise
    • Prepare wet paper towels. Fold into ankle and wrist cuffs. Freeze. Wear. Repeat.
    • Build a DIY air conditioner
    • Build a mini cold air fan
    • Build an “Evaporative Cooler for Direct Heat Relief”
    • Make a barricade of fans and ice cubes
    • Go to a store with air conditioning and browse around for as long as you can (Target is a good option for this).
    • Close all curtains, preferably the heat-absorbing kind
    • Or open all windows, depending on the wind situation
    • Take a cold bath or a cold shower twice a day
    • Wash your sheets before bed, but don’t dry them. Place them damp on your bed (assuming it’s a dry heat).
    • Portable air conditioning unit
