Company pulls Concord game two weeks after launch

The $40 hero shooter game is going offline Friday after poor sales and negative feedback. The company says anyone who bought the game will get a full refund.

PlayStation is pulling the plug on its online first-person shooter game less than two weeks after launch.

Concord, which debuted on August 23, is going offline on Friday after a flood of negative feedback, game director Ryan Ellis announced in a blog post on Tuesday.

“While many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch did not resonate as we intended,” Ellis wrote. “As a result, we have decided to take the game offline as of September 6, 2024, and explore options, including ones that will better reach our players.”

Buyers of the game will receive a full refund and sales will be halted immediately while developers “determine the best path forward.”

How do I get a refund for Concord

Gamers who purchased Concord will receive a full refund, regardless of how or where they purchased the game, Ellis’ blog post said. Players will immediately lose access to the game once they receive their refund.

People who purchased the game through digital distribution services for video games, such as Steam Store and Epic Games Store, will get their money back within a few days. They will receive a confirmation once the refund has been processed.

Customers who purchased a physical copy of the game from a retailer other than PlayStation will need to contact that retailer for a refund, Ellis wrote.

Why did the Concord game fail?

Concord has struggled with disappointing weekly sales, peaking at 697 concurrent players, significantly low for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s video game brand, Variety reported.

According to Paul Tassi, video game critic at Forbes, the main reason for Concord’s failure was its $40 price tag, while several other hero shooter games are free to play.

Tassi also blamed the market’s “over-saturation” of the hero shooter genre, arguing that games like Overwatch and Valorant are making it difficult for future games to thrive. He also criticized the game’s character designs and overall aesthetic, as well as a poor marketing campaign, among other reasons.

“It is clear that the concept and execution of Concord got almost everything wrong from start to finish,” he wrote.
