Update from 4:30pm: The Bear Fire has grown by nearly 500 acres since Tuesday morning.

The smoke plume from the fire near Loyalton, California, is much more visible in Northern Nevada Tuesday afternoon. According to Cal Fire, the fire is about 40 miles north of Truckee and is now 1,578 acres in size.

The fire started around 2 p.m. on Labor Day and quickly spread amid windy, hot and dry conditions in the Sierra. The blaze continues to threaten hundreds of homes. Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service have not released information about a possible cause.

According to the Sierra County Department of Public Works and Transportation, all outdoor irrigation has been halted and county officials are asking people to conserve water indoors during the Bear Fire.
