Former Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, once a rising star in the Republican Party and now one of former President Trump’s leading critics, says she will vote for Democratic nominee for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

“I don’t think we have the luxury of writing down candidates’ names, especially in swing states,” Cheney said Wednesday during a lecture at Duke University in North Carolina.

And she stressed that “as a conservative, as someone who believes in the Constitution and cares about it, I’ve thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only will I not vote for Donald Trump, I will vote for Kamala Harris.”

Minutes after the Cheney news broke, the Trump campaign posted on social media an interview with Cheney from four years ago on Fox News Channel, which focused on Harris.

“Her voting record in the Senate is more to the left than Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren,” Cheney argued at the time. “It’s obvious she’s a radical liberal.”

The Fox News interview came shortly after then-2020 Democratic presidential candidate Biden named then-Senator Harris as his running mate.

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was once a conservative star within the GOP and rose through the ranks of the Republican Party.

But she was the highest-profile of the 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted in early 2021 to impeach then-President Trump on charges of inciting the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by far-right activists and other Trump supporters who wanted to block Congress from certifying Biden’s 2020 Electoral College victory.

The conservative lawmaker and defense attorney was immediately verbally attacked by Trump and his allies, and was eventually removed from her position as number three Republican Party leadership position in the House of Representatives.

Cheney, who has frequently stressed the importance of defending the country’s democratic process and putting country before party, was one of two Republicans who served on a special committee set up by House Democrats to investigate the Capitol riots.

In 2022, she was defeated in the Republican primary for Congress in Wyoming by a candidate endorsed by Trump.

Cheney, who has argued that the former president is a “liar,” a “fraudster” and a potential “tyrant” who, if re-elected, would “set the Constitution on fire,” vowed after leaving Congress that “I will do everything in my power to make sure (Trump) never comes near the White House again.”

But despite the Biden campaign’s meddling, which transitioned into the Harris campaign in July after the vice president replaced her boss at the top of the 2024 Democratic constituency, Cheney has so far remained silent.

Cheney decided not to join other prominent anti-Trump Republicans — such as former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger and former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, who spoke in support of Harris at the Democratic National Convention last month.
