Paralympics day eight: Sammi Kinghorn goes for gold again

There are plenty of gold medals to be won on the eighth day of the Paralympic Games. Sammi Kinghorn is looking to get back on top of the podium, while veterans Matt Skelhon and Dan Greaves are in action.

The PA news agency previews what awaits Britain’s Paralympic athletes on an action-packed Thursday in Paris.

Double trouble for Sammi?

Wheelchair racer Kinghorn followed in the footsteps of Tanni Grey-Thompson on Wednesday by winning the T53 100m at Stade de France, becoming the first non-Chinese to win the event since her compatriot Grey-Thompson at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Tears flowed from the eyes of Kinghorn, who won silver in the T54 1500m and 800m last week. “I just can’t believe I’ve done that. It’s really amazing,” she said.

However, the Scottish Paralympic athlete has little time to reflect on her achievement as she aims for further glory in the 400m T53 discipline on Thursday, a busy day of athletics.

Then the man is

Tokyo champion Dan Pembroke will attempt to defend his U13 men’s javelin throw title on day eight of the Games.

Seven-time Paralympic athlete Dan Greaves is also aiming for a major role on day eight in the men’s F64 discus throw, but he will be joined by debutant Harrison Walsh.

Funmi Oduwaiye and Anna Nicholson are set for the shot put, while Nathan Maguire and Daniel Sidbury will compete in the men’s T54 800m. Melanie Woods is aiming for a podium finish in the T54 400m. Meanwhile, Olivia Breen and Maddie Down will be jumping for victory in the T38 long jump.

Alice wants to expand Tai-ly

Alice Tai, who has spoken openly about her mental health issues since her gold medal in Rio, hopes to win another medal at the successful Games.

Tai took gold in the S8 100m backstroke on Saturday, bringing her total to three medals in Paris. She will be looking to win another in the S8 500m freestyle final on Thursday night.

Fellow gold medallist Faye Rogers will compete in the S10 400m freestyle and Iona Winnifrith, 13, will compete in her favourite event, the women’s 100m breaststroke in the SB7 class. Rebecca Redfern will also be aiming for gold in the SB13 women’s 100m breaststroke.

Olivia has the power

Tokyo gold medalist Olivia Broome gets the chance to defend her women’s 50kg powerlifting title on day eight.

Charlotte McGuinness and Mark Swann will also be in action, making their Paralympic debuts in the women’s 55kg and men’s 65kg categories respectively.

All eyes will also be on Matt Skelhon, who will be competing in the second event of his fifth Paralympic Games, the R6 – a mixed 50m rifle lie.

Coutya catches Royal’s attention

British wheelchair fencer Coutya impressed the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh at the Grand Palais on Wednesday with a stunning performance to become Paralympic foil champion.

Kinghorn gave the British team double the trouble with her new Paralympic record of 15.64 seconds in her stunning T53 100m gold medal win. However, she will be aiming for another podium finish in the T53 400m discipline on day eight.

The day belonged to Dame Sarah Storey after she secured her 18th career Paralympic gold at Paris 2024 with victory in the women’s C5 time trial, overcoming a 7.18sec deficit at the mid-race checkpoint to seal her latest success.
