Fever defeats Sparks for fifth straight win

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever continued their post-Olympic tear on Wednesday, as Clark’s triple-double helped Indiana to a 93-86 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. It was the Fever’s fifth straight win and ninth in the last 11 games.

The favorite to win WNBA Rookie of the Year, Clark was named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month and August Rookie of the Month on Wednesday. Earlier in the week, she was also named Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Clark looked like one of those labels on Wednesday, producing another stellar stat line with 24 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. She also had three steals (she also had seven turnovers). Clark has been playing particularly well since WNBA play resumed after the Paris Olympics.

Clark is the only WNBA rookie to have a triple-double in league history, and she now has two. She also had one on July 6 in a surprise win over the New York Liberty.

The highlight of the game came in the third quarter when Clark threw a nice back pass to Aliyah Boston, who threw the pass to Erica Wheeler on the perimeter, where Wheeler made a 3-pointer to give Indiana a 66-61 lead.

Boston finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Kelsey Mitchell had 18. The win over LA helps the Fever move closer to sixth place; they clinched a spot in the playoffs on Tuesday night. Clark said before Wednesday’s game that she came to Indiana “with the expectation that this (going to the playoffs) is what’s going to happen.”

“This is not a party,” Clark said. “I’m not just happy to be in the playoffs. I think we have the type of team that can win and move on.”

Wednesday night kicked off a six-game home stretch for Indiana, which opened the 2024 season with a brutally tough schedule. The Fever host the Minnesota Lynx on Friday.
