This is when the iconic Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas will be demolished

One of the original casinos in Las Vegas is about to pay its final respects.

The Tropicana, which first opened in 1957, will implode on October 9. The hotel has been closed to visitors since April 2 and the contents of the 22-story property have been liquidated. Many walls have already been torn down in preparation for the event.

The massive demolition will be commemorated with a special drone and fireworks display following the implosion, scheduled for Oct. 9 at 2:30 a.m. PST, according to a social media post from Bally’s Corporation, the current owner of the Tropicana Las Vegas.

Located on the north end of the historic Las Vegas Strip, The Tropicana is best known as the filming location for the 1971 James Bond film “Diamonds are Forever.”

Following demolition, the Tropicana site will be converted into a new MLB baseball stadium for the A’s. The area will become a sports district that includes the adjacent Allegiant Stadium, home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, and T-Mobile Arena, home to many UFC fight events, as well as the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces and the NHL’s Golden Knights.

The Tropicana is the latest hotel to close as developers look to modernize and renovate some of the older properties into new casinos and hotels that may appeal to a wider range of travelers, or could be redeveloped for other uses.

Earlier this year, the Mirage closed its doors and is being renovated into a new Hard Rock hotel and casino, complete with a 700-foot guitar.

In 2018, MGM Resorts transformed the former Monte Carlo casino into the new Park MGM, featuring renovated guest rooms, a new Eataly food court and other improvements.

According to statistics from the regional tourism board, more than 40.8 million people visited Las Vegas in 2023.
