Cris Collinsworth and Jason Kelce react to a barrage of everyday penalties in Chiefs-Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens’ first drive of the 2024 NFL season got off to a rocky start.

The Ravensโ€™ offensive line was assessed three penalties in the gameโ€™s first seven plays, when tackle Ronnie Stanley and tackle Patrick Mekari were both called for illegal formation penaltiesโ€”a point of concern for the referees early this season. One of those penalties was for a defensive pass interference violation that had moved the ball deep into Chiefs territory.

In other words, there were unnecessary flags flying in the opening minutes of the game. Cris Collinsworth noticed the eagle eye of the refereeing team to start the season and brought it up on the NBC broadcast.

“Wow. They call that razor sharp here,” Collinsworth said. “… Taking a huge play off the books for the Ravens on the field.”

Recently retired Jason Kelce, who is off the NFL roster this season for the first time since his college days in Cincinnati, also weighed in.

And everyone watching at home had a similar thought:

Stanley was given another penalty for an illegal formation before the end of the first half.

Fortunately, the game got going after that. Baltimore fought through penalties and opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown from Derrick Henry, and the Kansas City Chiefs quickly struck back with 13 unanswered points.
