Tributes have poured in for American rapper Rich Homie Quan after his death was confirmed by authorities on Thursday.

The artist, who was in his early 30s, died in Atlanta, Georgia, the Fulton County coroner said.

The cause of death is unknown. Local medical authorities say an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Rich Homie Quan, whose legal name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was one of Atlanta’s most famous modern rappers.

He became a big name in the rap scene in the mid-2010s and achieved great success in 2013 with the hit Type of Way, which he followed up in 2015 with the popular Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).

He was nominated for several BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best New Artist and the People’s Champ Award.

He has also collaborated with several big names in the industry, including 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane and Trinidad James.

Rich Homie Quan was born in October 1989, the eldest of three siblings. He was raised in a single-parent household, according to Atlanta concert venue Masquerade. He originally dreamed of becoming a baseball player, but eventually switched to music.

In several interviews he spoke candidly about his childhood and in 2011 he spent 15 months in prison for his involvement in a series of burglaries.

Once out of prison, he focused on his music and became a major name in the rap scene by the mid-2010s.

Since his death was announced, tributes have been pouring in for the artist from across the rap world.

Singer Jacquees was among the first to pay his respects. “Rest in peace my brother Rich Homie Quan,” he said on X. “I love you for life,” he added, calling the rapper a “legend” in a later post.

2 Chainz posted a tribute on Instagram, saying, “Damn baby bro we just talked about recording a video special prayers for you and your family and praying for anyone dealing with anything my condolences bru”.

Rapper Quavo also posted a message on Instagram, captioning a photo of himself, Rich Homie Quan and several other artists: “May God be with us, we never thought this would be part of our journey.”

Engineer Alex Tumay, who worked with Rich Homie Quan for many years, said the artist was “one of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with and a true artist. Absolutely devastating news. RIP.”
