AUSTIN, Texas (TND) — Former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney will vote for the current vice president in November, his daughter announced Friday.

Liz Cheney, who represented Wyoming in the House of Representatives from 2017 to 2023, said at a newspaper festival in Texas that her father believes former President Donald Trump is a “threat to our democracy.”

“Dick Cheney will vote for Kamala Harris,” she said in a public interview. “My father believes, and he has said this publicly, that there has never been anyone in our country who is as serious a threat to our democracy as Donald Trump. And that is the moment we face.”

In 2022, former Vice President Cheney suggested that Trump attempted to steal the 2020 election by urging his supporters to protest the certification of the results on January 6, 2021. Trump has since maintained that he won the election, despite losing to President Joe Biden.

“He tried to steal the last election with lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters rejected him,” former Vice President Cheney said in a campaign video for his daughter. “He’s a coward. A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters.”

The former vice president added that he thought most Republicans knew Trump had lost the election. Liz Cheney said Friday that there are many political candidates in the country who have embraced “election denialism.”

Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, previously claimed the 2020 election was “stolen,” telling ABC News in February that there were “a lot of problems.”

Liz Cheney argued Friday that an “abyss” has opened in American politics, adding that Americans must work together to build “a better future” for the country. She also endorsed Harris herself earlier this week.
