Ravens-Chiefs Set NFL Kickoff Ratings Record With 28.9 Million Viewers

STAMFORD, Conn. — Kansas City’s thrilling 27-20 win over Baltimore on Thursday night was the most-watched NFL kickoff game since its inception in 2002.

The game had an overall average audience of 28.9 million, higher than the 27.6 million that saw the New England Patriots defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2015 season opener on NBC. Streaming was not added to the ratings until 2016.

That’s a 5% increase from the 27.5 million who watched Detroit’s season opener against Kansas City last year.

Despite the game starting 20 minutes late due to a lightning storm, NBC averaged 24.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen. In the second quarter (9:30-9:45 p.m. EDT), viewership peaked at 33 million.

The game also garnered a 37% market share on NBC, the network’s largest market share for a regular-season game since it began airing NFL games in prime time in 2006. A share is the percentage of all television sets in use at a given time to watch a program.

According to Adobe Analytics, the number of streams across digital platforms Peacock, NBC and NFL averaged 4.6 million.
