Eagles News: Quinyon Mitchell, Defensive Rookie of the Year?

Let’s go to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

2024 NFL Season Predictions: Playoffs, Super Bowl, Draft Order & Individual Awards – PhillyVoice
Defensive Rookie of the Year: Quinyon Mitchell, Eagles: The first defensive player taken in the 2024 draft, 15th overall! During training camp, I watched Mitchell earn a starting role at corner. He’s tough, instinctive, and has ideal size/athletic traits. I think he’ll be good right away and will likely stay on the field the entire game. He should get plenty of opportunities to make plays as opponents will test him.

Eagles-Packers Game Preview: 6 Q&As with the Enemy – BGN
I’m going with the Packers because I’m not sure about your offensive line. It’s week 1 so I’m not really sure what you’re going to do. I’m just hoping for a good game. I expect the Packers to win the division and be a contender in the NFC. If they don’t do that, they’ll be disappointed.

5 Questions for the Enemy: Packers vs. Eagles Preview – Acme Packing Company
With the Green Bay Packers’ strange season opener in Brazil against the Philadelphia Eagles just a day away, we figured it was time to pick the brain of Bleed Green Nation’s Brandon Lee Gowton — the manager of APC’s sister site that follows the Eagles. We got to ask him five questions about his team ahead of their Week 1 game. If you’d like to check out what he asked me for BGN, you can find it HERE.

Fantasy Football Week 1 Start/Seat Advice for Eagles vs. Packers in Brazil – SB Nation
Quarterbacks. Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles) – Off to a strong start. Philadelphia’s quarterback has emerged as an absolute elite fantasy prospect in recent years, finishing as the 3rd overall QB in 2022 and the 2nd overall QB behind only Josh Allen in 2023. While his passing numbers aren’t in the top echelons of his peers (he’s yet to reach 4,000 passing yards in a season), Hurts has thrown for at least 600 rushing yards and double-digit rushing touchdowns every year since becoming the full-time starter in 2021. That includes 15 rushing scores last year, which tied him with Allen for the most among QBs. The rushing upside makes Hurts completely matchup-proof.

Preview of week 1 with BLG – Go Birds Podcast
James Seltzer and Brandon Lee Gowton preview tomorrow night’s Eagles/Packers game in Brazil and discuss their expectations for the Birds this season.

Match Preview – GB at PHI – Iggles Blitz
Fangio has a revamped secondary to slow down the Packers’ group of talented receivers. There may not be a single elite player, but the overall group is excellent. It will be interesting to see if Quinyon Mitchell plays in the slot and outside or just stays at corner. The Eagles first-round pick had a strong summer and looks like he could be an impact rookie. The Eagles defense doesn’t need to pitch a shutout. They need to limit TDs and make some plays. The Eagles offense is loaded and should be able to score. Jalen Hurts is healthy and coming off a great camp. He added Saquon and Jahan Dotson as weapons. And he now has a coach in Kellen Moore who will be more creative and provide some schematic advantages that were lacking last year.

In Roob’s Eagles Observations: Figuring Out How to Replace Isaiah Rodgers – NBCSP
1. If you think Brandon Graham is just here to take a few bows, make a few rah-rah speeches and sit on the bench during his 15th and final NFL season, think again. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio loves BG and indicated this week that the 36-year-old might need to play more than he did last year: “I told him, ‘Be ready to play.’ There’s no pitch count for him.” Graham averaged 23 snaps per game last year, his lowest mark since 2013, when he played about 20 per game. But he was productive when he did get on the field, ranking 24th by Pro Football Focus out of 115 edge rushers who played at least 250 snaps. He finished the season with 3.0 sacks, six QB hits and 11 pressures, while playing about a third of the defensive snaps. With Haason Reddick gone, the Eagles have 862 snaps to replace. Bryce Huff will get a lot of them, but not 862. Josh Sweat likely won’t top the 49 snaps per game he played last year. If Nolan Smith is productive, he’ll play a lot. But Graham said he’s ready for a bigger workload. At 275 pounds, he’s lighter than he’s been in more than a decade and said he feels fast and strong as he heads toward becoming the first Eagle to play 15 seasons. “I feel great and I’m ready,” BG said. “Whatever they ask me to do, I’m ready for it.”

NFL Week 1 Preview: Schedule, Storylines and Matchups to Watch – PFF
Matchups to Watch: Packers QB Jordan Love vs. Eagles pass rush. Love put on a show last season to help secure Green Bay’s first playoff win since Aaron Rodgers left. He’s produced the league’s highest passing grade (89.1) since Week 7, in part due to his knack for landing downfield throws in the face of the pass rush. Love has compiled the most big-time throws (13) in the NFL during that span. The pride of this Eagles defense rests squarely on the shoulders of this pass rush. Their depth chart is loaded with talented names like Jalen Carter, Bryce Huff, Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat. Last season, that group produced the fifth-most QB pressures (264) in the NFL. This pass rush will need to tap into that production if it wants to shake Love.

Week 1 NFL Picks: Packers or Eagles in Brazil? Who Wins in Juicy AFC South Game: Texans or Colts? – NFL.com
Why Dan picked the Packers: If these teams pick up where they left off last season, Green Bay will be cruising in Brazil. I assume the Eagles will have put their complete collapse behind them in January, so this should be an entertaining matchup on the international stage. I don’t have a strong feeling about who has the upper hand here. There’s no doubt that Philadelphia has the talent to beat a Packers team that has been on a roll in 2023, but I’m picking Jordan Love and company in Week 1 because of the continuity they enjoy, particularly on offense. Yes, Matt LaFleur has new players on his roster, like every other team at the start of the season, but the Eagles are replacing the heartbeat of their franchise, Jason Kelce, and have new coordinators on both sides of the ball, with Jalen Hurts learning an offense that was “95 percent new” to him. I’m not sure things will go smoothly right away. If that happens, the Packers (and the rest of the league) are in trouble.

Solak’s NFL Picks for Week 1: The Surprises, Overs, Unders and Props to Watch – ESPN+
SGP: Green Bay Packers money line, Luke Musgrave OVER 24.5 receiving yards, Jalen Hurts UNDER 39.5 rushing yards (+475). There are a few bets I really like for this game, all of which look good individually but could also be converted. My power rankings have the Packers as the better team on a neutral field. Even if the Eagles defense fully recovers from its late-season collapse, I have my doubts that the new offense will be fully installed in Week 1. Hurts, with no preseason reps, in an offense that is 95% new with far more moves, formations, and concepts than the super-simple offense of seasons past? I expect hiccups. Meanwhile, Jordan Love should get just about anything he wants over the middle of the field against a starting linebacker duo of Nakobe Dean and Zack Baun.

Spadaro: 7 Packers-Eagles Storylines to Follow – PE.com
Will the Eagles’ offense hit the ground running (or pass)? The Eagles didn’t play their starting offense in preseason games, as they felt like that group had gotten enough good reps in practice against the Eagles defense and in the joint practice with New England. So there’s a lot of “unknown” here, with Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore providing the first real glimpse of what this offense will be. The idea is to be a versatile, play-it-weak, win-it-in-many-different-ways offense, and the Eagles certainly appear to have the depth of talent on the offensive line to play that way. It will be really interesting to see how it all shakes out in the opener. Head coach Nick Sirianni is 3-0 in openers, and the offense has performed well in all three of those games. This game won’t answer all the questions, of course, but it will provide some concrete evidence of what Moore’s approach will be this season.

Offensive line injuries could play a role in Cowboys vs Browns outcome – Blogging The Boys
One of the big stories coming out of this week’s matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns revolved around the left tackle position. The big question was how Cowboys rookie Tyler Guyton would fare against Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett or his partner Za’Darius Smith. While Guyton, a 2024 first-round draft pick, has looked fantastic in training camp and his brief preseason, he’s still a rookie and a true NFL game is second to none. It was a foregone conclusion that the Browns defense would try to isolate Guyton in the pass rush and take advantage of that. But as it turns out, the Cowboys may be able to do just that. Micah Parsons is just as good a pass rusher as Garrett, and he could play against a backup on Sunday. The Browns were hoping to have starting left tackle Jedrick Wills back on Sunday, but he missed practice Thursday with an injury and told reporters he wouldn’t start on Sunday.

Giants-Vikings: What to expect when Giants have the football – Big Blue View
The Giants should be able to move the football against the Vikings defense if their offensive line is competent. Blitzes will be sent and Bricillo’s blocking will have to be on their P’s and Q’s. Jones will have to find quick fixes if the Vikings are plus-one on the blitz. If those quick fixes are vertical one-on-one shots – great – if they are quick check downs, that’s fine too, as long as Jones doesn’t take unnecessary shots that put the Giants on second or third-and-long. Sam Darnold is the Vikings’ starting quarterback. This is a winnable football game against a defensive coordinator similar to the one the Giants recently hired. The offensive line should be much better. Nabers is a superstar in the making and the Giants are relatively healthy. Brian Daboll is calling plays now. They should be able to move the football and score some points as home underdogs in Week 1.

Commanders vs Buccaneers Thursday Injury Report: Two Players Miss Practice – Hogs Haven
Johnny Newton was limited yesterday but did not practice today. Dan Quinn explained that plan yesterday, saying the team will evaluate his foot issues tomorrow before determining if he can play Sunday. That seems like a long shot at this point, but we won’t have that answer until the weekend. Marcus Mariota has been dealing with a groin injury that limited him to one preseason game. Quinn said the injury was minor and that he would have been able to play if it was the regular season, but now he’s dealing with a different injury. He showed up on the injury report Wednesday with a pectoral injury and did not play today. If Mariota is unable to play Sunday, Washington has Jeff Driskel on the team’s backup and they also have Trace McSorley and Sam Hartman on the practice squad.
