Instant Analysis Penn State Escapes Surprise Bid from Bowling Green

After being inactive in Penn State’s win over Bowling Green on saturday, the status for tight end Andrew Rappleyea further is unclear, head coach James Franklin said after the match.

Franklin said he still hasn’t learned the exact nature of what’s wrong with Rappleyea, adding that it happened very recently. He also added that he hopes to consult with Rappleyea and his family before making more public.

“I can’t really speak, I can’t really speak on Rap right now, just because I don’t know, to be honest with you,” Franklin said. “This is very, very recent. So I just don’t have the information to give you and as you know, I won’t talk to you about injuries until I talk to the players and their families and make sure everyone is OK with the information. But I don’t know. It’s very recent.”

Franklin also showed confidence in potential tight end replacements, such as freshman Luke Reynolds.

“Luke is a guy that we have a lot of confidence in, not only physically but how he’s handled things since he stepped on campus as a true freshman. I’ve been really impressed with him,” Franklin said.

Franklin spoke of another important absence

Franklin spoke about the lack of Kevin Winston Jr.their safety who was named the Bednarik Award’s National Defensive Player of the Week in their season opener. Against West Virginiahe made a personal best of 12 tackles and a forced fumble.

Winston played in the first quarter against Bowling Green on Saturday, and briefly in the second quarter, before other players got snaps, including Jaylen Reed And Zakee Wheatley.

“Again, I can’t get into it KJ Winston and why he wasn’t in it. As you know, I don’t really talk about those things. But I mean, it obviously increased the reps for Jay Reed and it increased the reps for Zakee. And it also changed our ability to get into the package a little bit where Jay Reed is playing the Lion position. So we had to be on base a little bit more,” Franklin said.

Reed and Wheatley both made the most of their opportunities, with Reed making 10 tackles in total and Wheatley making six.

“It’s hard to get Prowler in if they don’t sub on third down, which a lot of people do. They don’t sub on third down, so we can’t get our Prowler on the field. That’s our rushing package. That’s a smart plan. Right? So, those are a couple of things we need to work on specifically for the bye week,” Franklin said.
