Tyler Booker starts at left tackle for Alabama football vs. USF

Alabama football opted to try something different on Saturday. With Kadyn Proctor nursing a shoulder injury, the Crimson Tide tapped a familiar face to start at left tackle.

Instead of starting Elijah Pritchett again, UA moved regular left guard Tyler Booker outside. It was a move UA offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic admitted the Tide had considered earlier in the week.

“We’ve got all kinds of thoughts,” Kapilovic said Wednesday. “And Booker has played every position since I’ve been here. He’s had center reps in the summer, he’s had tackle reps in the spring. Anything is possible, right? You just look and evaluate, who are your best guys? Who are the guys that can do it? And then you have them ready to go.”

Booker is one of Alabama’s captains this season, the leader of the Crimson Tide’s offensive line. UA released a photo from practice earlier this week showing Booker at left tackle, with Geno VanDeMark at left guard.

Indeed, when the Crimson Tide took the field for the first series of Saturday’s game against South Florida, it was Booker playing left tackle and VanDeMark playing guard.

Proctor was injured during pregame warmups for the Crimson Tide’s 63-0 win over Western Kentucky. Pritchett started in his place for that game.

Proctor appeared on the field in uniform during pre-game warm-ups. He did not appear to be wearing gloves or wrist tape.

As the Crimson Tide headed into the game, Proctor wore street clothes.

The game between Alabama and South Florida was scheduled to kick off at 6:05 p.m. CT. It will be broadcast on ESPN.
