Chargers-Raiders Recap: Mack, Defense Power Bolts to 22-10 Win

The first edition of Chargers-Raiders was everything you’d expect.

Both teams played hard, gritty football. The fire and energy were palpable throughout the game. It truly felt like an old-school throwback matchup between these two franchises, as there were plenty of scrums and a near-brawl late in the fourth quarter after the Chargers led 22-10 with less than three minutes left in regulation.

Justin Herbert didn’t have to single-handedly lead his team to victory by playing great this time around. He finished the day with 144 passing yards and a single score. That’s not the usual stat line for the Chargers’ golden boy. Instead, he had a clean game alongside a running game that totaled 176 yards on 27 attempts and a defense that picked the ball off three times.

That’s the recipe for success Harbaugh wants for this franchise. It’s what the Chargers want to emulate week in and week out. But for now, the first-year head coach can celebrate his first win alongside a team that fought hard for him when it mattered most.

Watch a full report of today’s match below, quarter by quarter.

First quarter

After winning the coin toss, the Raiders elected to defer. It was Chargers ball to start the game.

The first drive of the game began beyond the 35-yard line on a strong return by Derius Davis. Tight end Will Dissly caught the first pass of the game and fumbled 13 yards for a first down. Dissly was called for a false start on the next play, which ultimately derailed the drive when Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby stopped their second and third down plays with a stop for no gain and a sack on Herbert, respectively.

Jesse Minter’s first real drive at the helm of the defense went about as well as you could hope for, forcing a quick three-and-out. The stop was punctuated by a run that was stopped just short of the sticks by Joey Bosa and Alohi Gilman.

Dissly was given his second false start penalty on the second play of the ensuing drive, leading to another punt. Herbert was incomplete to Quentin Johnston on third down.

The Raiders got what appeared to be a first down on their second drive of the game, but the officials called it half a yard short. Antonio Pierce took a chance on a fourth-down run, but first-year Charger defensive tackle Poona Ford evaded the center’s block and held Zamir White for a loss of a yard.

The Bolts started on the Raiders’ side of the field and allowed Edwards to run for seven yards on first and second down. Unfortunately, Dissly was penalized for his third penalty of the game — this time a holding flag — which again ended the drive early. Herbert hit Johnston with a short crosser to put them back within field goal range and Cameron Dicker connected from 53 yards out to put the Bolts up 3-0 late in the first quarter.

Minshew and All-Pro receiver Davante Adams finally got on the same page when the two connected on a pair of completions for 30 yards, both on big third downs. On first-and-10 from the Chargers’ 31-yard line, Minshew hit running back Alexander Mattison in the flat, who hopped over both Asante Samuel Jr. and Daiyan Henley before closing the sideline and sprinting toward the end zone.

With 45 seconds left in the quarter, the Raiders led 7-3.

Second quarter

The second quarter started with three points — two by the Chargers and one by the Raiders. On L.A.’s second drive of the quarter, McConkey picked off a pass for a first down on the very first play, but the Chargers’ drive was again thwarted by a false start penalty. It was the fourth of the day, and this time McConkey was the culprit.

Minshew had the Raiders moving with a pair of completions to rookie tight end Brock Bowers, pushing them into Chargers territory. This is when the pass rush came to life.

On second-and-10 from the 43-yard line, Morgan Fox and Khalil Mack connected at the quarterback to bring down Minshew for a loss of 12 yards. On the next play, Bosa pulled a stunt by coming off the edge into the A gap and ran straight into Minshew’s lap for his first sack of the season.

The Raiders had possession with 1:22 left in the half at the Chargers’ 48-yard line when Minshew was sacked, sending the ball to the sideline. Kristian Fulton beat Minshew to the ball but was unable to contain him. Mack then stepped up and grabbed it before running 22 yards to the Raiders’ 12-yard line. With excellent field position, the Chargers gained just five yards before settling for a short field goal to make it 7-6 at halftime.

Third quarter

The Chargers defense got off to a hot start in the second half by forcing the Raiders into another three-and-out. The ensuing drive was the Chargers’ longest drive of the day, as they covered 74 yards in nine plays thanks to a 46-yard run by Dobbins, his longest since his rookie season in 2024. Dobbins’ run brought the Chargers to the Raiders’ seven-yard line, but they could only cover one yard from there as Dicker converted his third punt of the day to make it 9-7.

Las Vegas leaned on the run game to start their next drive with Zamir White getting two carries on the first three plays for 26 yards. At the end of his second carry, however, Bosa tracked down the runner and forced the ball out, which was recovered by the Chargers on their own 45-yard line.

Once again, the Bolts were held to a three-and-out on offense. On third-and-4, Herbert threw behind Palmer on a deep crosser and the ball was nearly plucked off Palmer’s hands. Initially, there was talk of a turnover, but a review overturned the takeaway. The Chargers were going to punt anyway.

Vegas’ White began to feel it again on the ground, hitting a couple of strong runs that gave Adams an extra chunk of gain through the air. The defense hunkered down to force a field goal, but Daniel Carlson was wide to the right and the Bolts took over at their own 39-yard line.

Herbert and the offense opened with a 27-yard pass to Hayden Hurst down the right sideline on a fake-screen pass to Derius Davis in the flat. Hurst faked a downfield block before sprinting into the open grass. Three plays later, Herbert hit Palmer on an out route for a first down. Edwards broke a 10-yard run up the middle for his longest run of the day to set up the Chargers at the Raiders’ 12-yard line as the quarter ended.

Fourth quarter

On the very first play of the quarter, Herbert handed the ball to Dobbins out of the shotgun and the freshman Bolt plowed through several would-be tacklers to find the end zone from 12 yards out. The first Chargers touchdown of the season put the Bolts up 16-7 on the Raiders.

The Raiders responded with a long drive of their own, highlighted by a 33-yard catch-and-run by wideout Jakobi Meyers. Khalil Mack recorded another sack two plays later on second down, and the defense held on third down to force Carlson to attempt another field goal.

Forced to punt on their ensuing drive, Chargers punter JK Scott fired his kick 41 yards to Vegas’ Tre Tucker at their own 27. Tucker took the ball back 21 yards to give the Raiders their best starting field position of the day. Facing fourth-and-one at the Chargers’ 43, Antonio Pierce elected to punt the ball away instead of going for it to increase the pressure on the Bolts.

On the ensuing drive, Dobbins broke off what would become the Chargers’ longest run in two full seasons when he burst through the Raiders’ defense for 61 yards to the Vegas. Herbert found McConkey on third-and-six to put the Chargers up 22-10 after their two-point conversion attempt failed.

After the two-point attempt, a brawl broke out, stemming from a fight between Palmer and Raiders defensive back Marcus Epps. Crosby and Johnston also got involved and had to be separated, with Harbaugh coming all the way to the end zone to make sure his players were brought back to the sideline.

Minshew and the Raiders did what they could with a 12-point deficit and little time left on the clock, but their comeback attempt was short-lived when Mack blocked a pass into the arms of defensive tackle Poona Ford for his first career interception.

The Bolts won 22-10.
