How to Watch ‘MNF’ Amid Disney-DirecTV Contract Dispute

play

While DirecTV and Disney continue to bicker like an old married couple, DirecTV customers hoping to watch “Monday Night Football” between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets on ABC are in for an unpleasant surprise when they learn that DirecTV is no longer airing the channel.

Due to a contract dispute between DirecTV and Disney, Disney pulled most of its programming from DirecTV servers on September 1, leaving DirecTV owners without channels like ESPN, ESPN2, ACC Network, SEC Network, and yes, ABC. Non-sports channels like Disney Channel, FX, and National Geographic were also pulled. None of these channels have returned, as the two sides are still working out a new contract.

This dilemma leaves NFL fans with quite the conundrum. How are they supposed to watch the conclusion of Week 1 of the NFL? Well, there are plenty of ways to get your NFL fix tonight without DirecTV.

What’s going on between Disney and DirecTV?

A five-year contract between Disney and DirecTV, which allowed DirecTV to air Disney content, expired on September 1. Although the two sides were negotiating a new contract, they were unable to reach an agreement before the expiration date and it appears they are not close to a deal.

The dispute reportedly heated up over the past week. DirecTV subscribers watching ESPN were shown warnings stating that they could lose access to ESPN and its affiliated networks. The message then instructed viewers to visit KeepMyESPN.com for more information. On the website, Disney says, “We are continually working with our cable, satellite, telecommunications and streaming distribution partners to continue offering fans our networks on their television channel lists. Disney Entertainment has a very successful track record of negotiating with providers of all types and sizes across the country and strives to achieve fair, market-based rates and terms.”

Early Monday morning, a Disney representative contacted USA Today and urged DirecTV to stop being a distraction and instead prioritize their customers. They believe that giving “Monday Night Football” back to their customers would be a good start. Disney also claimed that they are working tirelessly to reach a deal, saying, “We continue to negotiate with DirecTV to get our content back as soon as possible.” This claim contradicts what DirecTV Chief Content Officer Rob Thun said after the initial blackout on September 1, when he said that “there’s no one in the room talking right now” when asked how close DirecTV and Disney were to a deal.
