Selena Gomez ‘had to grieve’ because she couldn’t carry her own children

Selena Gomez opens up about her plans for motherhood in the future.

Speaking with Vanity Fair In the magazine’s October issue, which was published on Monday, September 9, the 32-year-old actress and singer explained that she cannot carry her children.

“I’ve never said this before… but unfortunately I can’t carry my own children,” Gomez said. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s life at risk. That was something I had to grieve for a while…”

Gomez has previously spoken about suffering from complications of lupus, which she was diagnosed with in 2015. She also revealed her bipolar diagnosis in April 2020 during an episode of Miley Cyrus’ Instagram Live show Clear of mind.

She added: “(But) I’m in much better shape. I think it’s a blessing that there are wonderful people out there who are willing to do surrogacy or adoption, both of which are huge options for me.”

“It made me really grateful that there are other outlets for people who want to be mothers. I’m one of those people,” she continued. “I’m excited about what that journey will look like, but it’s going to look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’s going to be mine. It’s going to be my baby.”

This isn’t the first time Gomez has spoken about her desire to become a mother in the future.

Gomez shared in a November 2022 article that she was crying in her car and thinking about how the two medications she takes for her bipolar disorder will likely prevent her from ever being able to carry her own children.

“That’s a really big, huge, current thing in my life,” Gomez told the outlet, before noting that she hopes to continue to be a mother in a different way in the years to come.

“However I want them, I’ll get them,” she added of the prospect of having children.

According to a WebMD doctor-reviewed article, medications for bipolar disorder can cause birth problems, including neural tube defects, heart defects, and developmental delays or neurobehavioral problems. However, some doctors recommend continuing such medications until delivery because bipolar symptoms can worsen during pregnancy.

Gomez’s comments about her boyfriend come after she revealed that cooking with Blanco really “grounds” her.

“I love fresh food and stuff. I’m starting to appreciate that stuff because of my boyfriend,” she said. “Just being in the garden and picking food to cook with. It sounds so silly and small, but the older you get, the more you realize that it’s okay to just be simple and have simplicity.”
