Selena Gomez Says She Can’t Have Children: ‘It’s Something I Had to Grieve’

Selena Gomez is opening up about how her future journey to motherhood “might look a little different” than how she “envisioned it.”

The 32-year-old singer and actress told Vanity Fair in an interview released Monday that she cannot carry her own children.

“I’ve never said this before, but unfortunately I can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s life at risk. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she said.

Gomez did not provide further details about the medical complications that prevented her from conceiving.

The actress said she is “doing much better now” and that she is not ruling out motherhood in the future.

“I think it’s a blessing that there are amazing people out there who are willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge opportunities for me. It made me really grateful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be mothers. I’m one of those people,” Gomez told the outlet.

She continued, “I’m excited about what that journey will look like, but it’s going to look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’s going to be mine. It’s going to be my baby.”

In 2013, Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and tissue damage throughout the body, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2015, she revealed that she had undergone chemotherapy to treat the autoimmune disease. In 2017, Gomez revealed that she was recovering from a kidney transplant that she needed as a result of her lupus diagnosis.

The pop star, who is in a relationship with musician Benny Blanco, told the outlet that she planned to start a family before she turns 35.

“Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, except for a few dates,” she said. “And I thought, ‘Okay, if this is the vibe, what’s the most important thing to me? Family.'”

Gomez also said she’s “never been loved like this before.”

“He’s just a light,” she said. “A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything.”
