Trump says he doesn’t ‘care’ what race Harris is – after questioning if she’s black

Topline

Former President Donald Trump attempted to water down his previous statements by asking during Tuesday’s debate whether Vice President Kamala Harris is black. He told moderators that he didn’t “care” how she identifies, then falsely said that Harris had previously said she wasn’t black.

Key Facts

Trump said, “I don’t do that and I don’t care” when an ABC host asked him why he thinks it’s appropriate to speak out about Harris’ racial identity. He was referring to a July interview in which Trump said that Harris, whose father is from Jamaica and mother is from South India, “turned around and … became a black person.”

Trump said, “I don’t care, whatever she wants to be, it’s okay with me,” and then claimed he had read that Harris “put out” she wasn’t black, “then I read she was black.”

There is no evidence that Harris has ever denied or downplayed her mixed heritage. She has repeatedly referred to her father as a black man and herself as a black man throughout her political career, while also acknowledging her mother’s Native American heritage.

Chief Critic

“I think it’s a tragedy, frankly, that we have someone who wants to be president who has consistently tried throughout his career to use race to divide the American people,” Harris said in response to Trump’s comments about her race.

Main background

Trump said during the July forum with the National Association of Black Journalists that he didn’t know Harris was black “until a number of years ago when she happened to become black and now wants to be known as black,” and claimed that “she was all Indian, and then all of a sudden she did a U-turn.” Trump made the comments in response to a question about whether he agreed with Republicans who had suggested she was unqualified for her role and represented a “DEI hire,” referring to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, an inference widely viewed as racist.
