WATCH: Harris says she won’t ban fracking

Debate moderators asked Vice President Kamala Harris why some of her policy positions have changed since she last ran for president. During her 2019 Democratic campaign, Harris said she would support a ban on fracking, a controversial technique that extracts gas and oil from rock formations.

“My values haven’t changed,” Harris said.

During the debate with former President Donald Trump on September 10 in the swing state of Pennsylvania, she said it was the decisive vote on the Inflation Reduction Act, which would allow new fracking concessions.

“My position is that we need to invest in diverse energy sources so that we reduce our dependence on foreign oil,” she said. “We’ve had the largest increase in domestic oil production in history because of an approach that recognizes that we can’t be too dependent on foreign oil.”

Harris and Trump met for their first and possibly only debate, hosted by ABC in Philadelphia. Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer after Biden delivered a troubling debate performance in June that prompted growing calls for him to drop out of the race.

According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a major impact on which candidate they choose.
