Central Park Five’s Yusef Salaam to Run for Harris Post Debate

In a back-and-forth over race, Kamala Harris attempted to paint Donald Trump as someone with a poor record on American race relations. She referenced Trump’s record on the Central Park Five, a reference to several teenagers who were charged and wrongly convicted in connection with a series of bombings in New York in 1989. Trump, then a local real estate developer, paid for a full-page ad calling on the state to bring back the death penalty in response to the attack

Harris criticized Trump during the debate for running the ad, and shortly afterward her campaign said that New York City Councilmember Yusef Salaam, one of the Exonerated Five, would be in the debate spin room in Philadelphia after the debate. Salaam spent nearly seven years in prison in connection with the 1989 incident, which made headlines in New York and stoked white fears about black and Hispanic teenagers “wilding” in Central Park.
