Dave Grohl Baby, His Wife and Celebrity Disappointment

Dave Grohl surprised fans on Tuesday with the surprising announcement that he has fathered a child outside of his 21-year marriage to Jordyn Blum.

The Foo Fighters frontman is asking for “forgiveness” from his family following the birth of his youngest daughter. “I recently became the father of a new baby daughter, born out of wedlock,” Grohl, 55, wrote in a statement shared on social media on Tuesday. He is already father to Violet, 18; Harper, 15; and Ophelia, 10.

“I intend to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am committed to doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness,” the statement continued. “We are grateful for your consideration for all of the children involved as we move forward together.”

Representatives for Grohl declined to comment further.

Naturally, fans weighed in. “Dave Grohl reminded us that men will always be men smh,” wrote one X user. Another added: “You’d expect all the frontmen of rock bands to cheat on their wives and have a kid outside of marriage… Dave Grohl is at the bottom of everyone’s list.” Plus: “I had so much respect for Dave Grohl. He’s made some inappropriate comments but I truly believed he was one of the few good guys left in music. Cheating on your wife of 20+ years, 3 daughters and having a CHILD with someone else? There goes that reputation.”

The incident highlights the pitfalls of fan culture. When you put someone, no matter how famous, on the highest pedestals, you are bound to be disappointed.

“It’s important not to hold celebrities to impossible standards, because these are fallible human beings with inevitable flaws and shortcomings, just like the rest of us,” Shana Redmond, a professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, previously told USA TODAY. “What we see on social media is a small piece of who they are — we can’t replace that glamour with the whole.”

Dave Grohl and his reputation as a nice guy

Stan culture is flawed because people are flawed. How can you expect someone who can sing well, for example, to be good at everything? Grohl may have had a reputation as a nice guy, but no one is 100% good or bad in their life.

“I really, really admire my urologist for being able to remove kidney stones from my body,” Robert Thompson, founder of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, previously told USA TODAY. “I don’t think my urologist is perfect in any other way.”

Such disappointments are not unexpected.

“When (characters) don’t turn out the way you imagine, disappointment is to be expected,” Redmond says. “And that can happen a lot, because we’re constantly bombarded with new media that’s supposed to hook us and make us fall for someone.”

What we can learn about our heroes

Of course, there’s still a lot we don’t know about this particular situation. But you can’t help but wonder why Grohl chose a moment when this news could have easily slipped under the radar – right before a presidential debate.

“The timing of this Dave Grohl ‘announcement’ is impeccable,” wrote another X user. “Hours before a presidential debate. Headlines buried within hours.” While the news made the rounds, it likely had less immediate impact given the distraction.

Time will tell whether Grohl can best manage his reputation as more news emerges.

With this latest news, fans are reminded once again that sometimes their heroes lose their capes.
